HEARTS & HOMES

Working to Make a Place for Community Members with Developmental Disabilities

Our Homes

Hearts & Homes currently owns 10 homes serving 27 individuals.  These homes range from town homes and condominiums, with space for two adults who live, work and socialize within the community with some support services, to two intermediate care  homes for medically fragile individuals who need round the clock care.

Hearts & Homes is also proud to have partnered with the non-profit Virginia Beach Community Development Corporation in the establishment of BizNet Village, an intermediate care residence divided into two buildings - Jenny's Place and Terry's Place. Although BizNet Village is owned and operated by the City of Virginia Beach,  Hearts & Homes funds various  social activities and  quality-of-life enhancing equipment for the benefit of its 24 residents.

There is a great deal of work still to be done.  Currently, there are almost 400 Virginia Beach adult residents with developmental disabilities on a waiting list  for funding for residential services and support.  Of these, over 100 meet urgent status criteria because they no longer have a desirable place to live.  This often occurs when parents become too elderly to care for their children.

Hearts & Homes works closely with the Virginia Beach Department of Human Services' (VBDHS) Developmental Services Division to ensure that the housing we provide to our residents is the most appropriate environment for him/her to thrive in.  Therefore, all request for our housing opportunities are assessed by VBDHS' Case Management Services Unit and Supportive Living Programs.  Case management is available for individuals with a diagnosis of intellectual disability.  Case managers link the individual and his/her family with needed services and available housing opportunities.  Call (757) 385-0060 or click here for more information.

As the need for affordable housing and support for adults with developmental disabilities continues to grow, Hearts & Homes will continue to find creative solutions to expand options available to this important part of our community.  We welcome the help and contributions of our fellow citizens in creating and maintaining Homes with Heart.
